Lieutenant Lee of Beale Street First edition signed and inscribed by Lieutenant George W. Lee (1894-1976) David Tucker, Nashville Vanderbilt University Press 1971. Historical account of the major figure in Tennessee's black political community prior to the modern civil rights movement. Known "Lieutenant Lee," both for his army service as a lieutenant in World War I and as the lieutenant for the powerful African American capitalist and Republican Party leader Robert Church Sr. (1839-1912, the first African American born into slavery to become a millionaire). Inscribed to E.L. and Jewel Simon. Edwin L. Simon was the Sr. Vice president of Atlanta Life Insurance Company; Jewel Woodward Simon (1911-1996) was a noted sculptor, painter, print maker, poet, musician, and prominent Atlanta civic leader.
