Known "Lieutenant Lee," both for his army service as a lieutenant in World War I and as the lieutenant for the powerful African American capitalist and Republican Party leader Robert Church Sr. (1839-1912, the first African American born into slavery to become a millionaire). Inscribed to E.L. and Jewel Simon. Edwin L. Simon was the Sr. Vice president of Atlanta Life Insurance Company; Jewel Woodward Simon (1911-1996) was a noted sculptor, painter, print maker, poet, musician, and prominent Atlanta civic leader.
