The Balkans produced more pistols than any other region of the Ottoman Empire. The distinctive rattail stock was made primarily in Albania and exported for use throughout the Ottoman Empire. Lock with simple engraved design and applied brass ball decoration; frizzen with dovetailed grooved strike plate. Round 13 1/2" barrel of approximately .65 cal with engraving and raised design on breech (worn) and plain brass barrel band. The wooden stock is completely covered with sheet brass engraved with arabesques, featuring decorative nails behind lock and inlaid red stones. Steel vent pick where a ramrod would normally be found, though these Ottoman pistols usually only had false ramrods. Steel parts showing wear and dark age patina. Overall length 20 1/2". A very good example, similar to those pictured in Fig. 112, page 159 in "Islamic Weapons, Maghrib to Moghul", by Anthony Tirri.
