Offered for sale is a beautifully hand tinted late 19th C photograph of a mountain scene clearly showing telephone poles set into a mountain beside a road. The telephone poles are in the very center of the photograph and appear as a "line" just to the right of the road. Though difficult to see on the computer, t are also lovely pink flowers in the lower center of this photo, surrounded by green shrubbery. The lower left shows the edge of a tree trunk. Beyond and above this is the retaining wall that supports the road above. The road has a fence along its outer edge, with a mountain rising above it to the left. The frame and glass appear to be original as well. The photograph is mounted on a backing with lines which frame the picture, typical for late 19th C mounted photographs. The mounting may have a photographer's name on its reverse, but I have not opened the frame to check for this. The frame measures 12" H x 6" W x 3/4" D. The photograph measures 9 1/2" H x 3 3/4" W. This is a very interesting record of a mountain road before the beginning of the 20th C. (Telephones were connected between New York and Chicago by 1892, so phone lines were strung through the mountains at least as far back as that.)
