Late 17th Century Tibetan Painted Chest. A beautifully painted mythical dragon-like beast on the front of this antique Tibetan chest is the focal point of this treasure. The beast is surrounded by a reddish-orange background with swirls of light yellowish-brown. Some of the painted framing is greenish-black. The maticilous painting techinque results in the painted surface feel raised and beaded to the touch. While most of the painting seems to be original, it has probably been retouched during its long life of use. On all corners and in many other places are metal hinges and attachments, including a workable latch on the front of the chest. Both the back and the sides of the chest are stained in a rich warm reddish-brown finish. The interior is unfinished. Purchased in Singapore during Ms. Phillips travels, it is considered to be over 200 years old. It's original use would be similar to use today--storage for items not often used. However, today, it would also work great as a coffee table. Asian Furniture & Furnishings: Late 17th Century Tibetan Painted Chest from Tibet.
