Large Mosaic Plaque Titled Promessi Sposi (The Betrothed) from Vatican Workshop

This extraordinary micromosaic plaque comes from the Vatican mosaic studio and is believed to date from the mid twentieth century. It depicts a scene from the The Betrothed (Promessi Sposi), the Italian historical novel by Alessandro Manzoni which was first published in 1827. Label on verso reads " Rev. Fabricca de S. Pietro In Vaticano, Studio Mosaico" , with title " Promessi Sposi" and number 5596A. ("S. Pietro" is not the artist's name and is simply a reference to Basilica di San Pietro (St. Peter's Cathedral) in the Vatican.) Gilded wooden frame measures 31" by 36.5" by 2.5". Plaque measures 24" by 29.5". Condition is excellent. There is one stone loss in the upper left corner. Additional images forwarded upon request.
