Alexander studied at the Vancouver Art School and Langara College art dept. and then graduated with a BFA from Notre Dame University. In 1980 he moved to Saskatoon to obtain his Master degree while researching in New York, London and Paris. He has travelled the world to attend his exhibitions,conduct lectures and drawing and painting research. In 2006 Alexander attended the Morris Graves Foundation in California as an invited guest artist in residence and completed a large body of small paintings on wood panels. In 2007 he visited Tokyo and Kyoto and was inspired by the parks and water features.In September 2008 he returned to the high arctic as an invited member aboard a 75 ft.sailing ship that was circumnavigating North America through the North West Passage where he sailed from Tuktoyaktuk, Canada to Point Barrow Alaska. The expedition,Nord 69 consisted of artists,scientists and writers raising cultural and environmental awareness towards global warming. David Alexander's art is in many public,private and corporate collections throughout the world, including The Vancouver Art Gallery, Museum of London,University of Toronto and Concordia University in Montreal, Museum of Art in Iceland, Canadian Embassies in Berlin, Beijing and Krakow. Corporate collections also include works throughout Canadian cities as well as Dubai,Seoul, New York, Mumbai and Nice France and others.Alexander's signature landscapes/waterscapes represent his significant 40 career in painting through a bold palette and gestural application.
David Alexander was recently selected over numerous international applicants as a recipient of the Helene Wurlitzer Foundation Grant for 2012. Alexander looks forward to this concentrated residence in Taos, New Mexico and to be with artists creating and then sharing the results that arises from this time spent in one of the unique places in North America.
Alexander's most recent solo exhibition was in June 2011 at Bau-Xi Toronto and his next solo exhibition will be at Foster/White Seattle in October 2011. 047
