Lancaster Machine Ratchet Auger Brace 10 inch No. 1010

This is a very rare 10" swing ratchet brace marked "NO. 1010" on the frame arm. I have another brace just like this one that is marked No. 1010 and is also marked and "L. M. & K. WKS LANCASTER N.Y. U.S.A." on the chuck sleeve, however this brace chuck sleeve is not marked with that name, but I am sure is was made by Lancaster Machine & Knife Works. This brace measures 15.25" long overall. It has a spring loaded pair of flip latch pawls that engage or disengage/lock the ratchet system, much like similar on the Peck, Stow and Wilcox ratchet braces, but a different type of chuck than the P.S. & W. offered. The ratchet system features the directional control and the lock spindle feature. This Lancaster brace has the spring loaded alligator jaws much like many top quality Millers Falls braces featured, and the sleeve is very similar in shape and size to that of a Millers Falls also. The head spindle is ball bearing, and very smooth operation. Overall condiiton is very good working order, no missing or damaged parts, no rust, very solid cocobolo handles, (a few dents noted on the end handle) very little wear, very little minor pitting on the frame, much less than normal wear. A very rare collectible ratchet brace, as most ratchet braces seen by this maker are not flip pawl type. Very nicely designed and top quality manufacturing.
