This exceptional KPM porcelain plaque is believed to depict the famous meeting of Sir Thomas More (1478-1535) with Cardinal Thomas Wolsey (1475-1530) in his chambers at Hampton Court.  It is in very good condition, with no breaks, visible cracks or restorations.   KPM and septre hallmarks and numeric marks 15 and 12 which refer to the size of the plaque.  Frame measures 25 by 23 by 1.5 in (63.5 by 58.4 by 2 cm).  Portion of the plaque visible between the red fabric-covered matte measures 14.6 by 11.5 in (37.1 by 29.1 cm).  This plaque was professionally framed by its prior owner, likely sometime in the ten years or so.  A dark stained wooden panel has been added to the rear of the frame with two holes cut to reveal the hallmarks.  We will not dismantle the frame for photography or shipping, and are selling the item as-is.  There are some scuffs and losses to the finish on the frame.

Sir Thomas More was the 16th-century Lord Chancellor of England who refused to sign a letter asking the Pope to annul King Henry VIII's marriage to Catherine of Aragon, the first of his six wives.  He resigned rather than take an Oath of Supremacy declaring King the Supreme Head of the Catholic Church in England.   The scene depicted in this plaque depicts Sir Thomas More visiting Cardinal Wolsey at his palace chambers at Hampton Court.  During this famous meeting, Wolsey sought More's support in obtaining a divorce from the Pope so the King could marry Anne Boleyn. Wolsey chastised More for being the only member of the Privy Council to argue against him.
