This is a unique antique tool patented in 1892 by a innovative maker in Maine. It's marked in two places one reads "MAKER BELFAST ME" the other mark reads "JONES PAT. MAR.1.92". This spiral screwdriver is 10.5 long closed, 16.5" long fully opened, not including the slot type screwdriver bit. The chuck is a split round collet type chuck that holds round shank screwdriver or drill bit that have two flats on the chuck end of the shank to match the female flats in the chuck to keep the bits from spinning. This spiral screwdriver/drill is in nice clean condition with only a few minor dings on the metal parts, the handle is in clean solid condition as well, although we note that the end of the handle is missing what appears to be an end cap, so it is open at about a 1 inch diameter, and we can see the inside brass tube area that the sprial shaft moves in and out of. The handle has some finish wear noted, like small or minor scratches, and stain loss, one flat also noted on one side. This particular type does have a spiral, and ratchet system. The knurled brass sleeve on the largest brass shaft moves toward the chuck for clockwise rotation, and toward the handle for counter-clockwise rotation, however, this type will not ratchet in the closed position like the YANKEE brand screwdrivers will. It allows you to driver screws by pushing the handle toward the screw being driven, then it will allow you to pull the handle back without turning the spiral system, so you don't have to take the slot bit out of the screw slot. A rare find, don't miss out! We are not sure if this maker also made other driver and drill bits to fit this driver or not, but we have included one slot bit in good shape that fits well into the collet chuck. A very innovative design, and quite rare also! Note: This screwdriver is commparible to the F. A. Howard spiral screwdriver from the same era. However, this one is believed to be the first reversible spiral screwdriver patented and mass manufactured in the U.S.A..
