Both the maker of the compass, Ritchie of Boston, and the maker (?) of the binnacle, John Bliss & Co, of New York, trace their beginnings to the mid-1800’s. These two venerable firms combined to deliver this lovely brass skylight binnacle & compass, which measures 11 inches in diameter and 15.5 inches in height. It has been polished and lacquered, and is in excellent condition, noting a dent or two in the skylight night cover.

The custom-made octagonal wood pedestal is 34 inches high, and is also in excellent condition. No apologies, and no refinishing needed.

The Ritchie compass has a serial number that dates it to the 1930's and, though the binnacle itself bears a serial number, a quick search reveals no info on Bliss numbers.

Skylight binnacles have been seen in movies and on TV, always on vintage, classic boats. I have had probably more than my share for sale in the past few years, and there is only a small supply of these (of any age) out there, as collectors are not parting with theirs. Just recently, one of the modern nautical instrument makers has re-introduced a lovely skylight binnacle and compass, but comparing its modern look with the classic Bliss binnacle construction and appearance leaves little doubt -- the Bliss binnacle is a classic. I have had only two of them for sale in my 27 years as a dealer, and this one is by far the better.

I am limited here to four photos, but others are available. Please ask.
