This delightful watercolor on artist board was painted by Jean Bijur Weiss (b. New York 1912, d. Stamford CT 1995), and is entitled Booth Bay Harbor. Painting resides under glass in a frame measuring 27" by 23" by 1.5". The board measures 20" by 16". This appealing work exhibits elements of the Cubist style and depicts a crowded waterfront filled with boathouses and boats. BoothBay Harbor is a coastal town east of Brunswick and roughly fifty miles northeast of Portland. Weiss lived in Chappaqua NY and studied at the New York School of Design, Columbia University, Silvermine Guild Arts Center (New Caanan, CT), Art Students League, Pratt Graphic Arts Center, and with Arshile Gorky, George Grosz and Joseph Binder. She is known to have exhibited at the New England Annual at Silvermine (1956), the American Watercolor Society in New York, the Katonah Gallery (1971), among other institutions. Two paintings by Weiss are held in the permanent collection of the Smitsonian American Art Museum in Washington DC. (Source: Who's Who in American Art, 1973.)
