Antique Japanese Black Lacquer  Mother of Pearl Cigarette Box, Chest  with Brass Ashtray   Features 2 women gazing  across the water with a house and mountains of the other shore. The left lower corner of the lid  has an interesting detail of wood grain showing through .   All the sides has mother of pearl and abalone shell inlay as well.  The box is on 4 legs and is beveled.  The lid is slightly bowed.      On the side is a compartment for holding old style unfiltered cigarettes.  Then to the side has hand spun brass container that serves at the ashtray.    The box or chest can be used for storing trinkets or jewelry too.  However the original purpose was as a smoking box.     It is 8" wide x 4.75" deep x 2.5" tall.

The condition is very good for age.  There are a few very minor scratches to the surface of the lids.  There are a few very small nicks in the lacquer on the bottom edge of the lid and where  the box base flares out.   But these are really very minor and not noticeable on normal viewing.
