Italian Alabaster Maiden & Putti Sculpture by Petrilli

Unavailable
This magnificent figural marble group by the Italian artist, Aristide Petrilli, dates from the last quarter of the ninetenth century, and depicts a young maiden sleeping on a bench, surrounded by cherubs. One is suspended on her shoulder and whispering in her ear, while a group in cloud formation floats above the bench and are presenting flower baskets and a box overflowing with jewels. A trio of cherubs on the left are singing as they read from a musical score. The frieze of the bench is carved with muses and lion monopodes decorate the corners, while gargoyle masks decorate the sides. The incised gilt metal plaque reads SOGNO Gall. Prof. A. Petrilli FIRENZE. The Latin title of the work is inscribed on the front of the bench, SAMPER NON SAMPER, which roughly translates to "always, not always". It measures 18.5" wide, 15" tall and 8.5" deep. Petrilli is best known, like his contempories Caradossi and Frilli, for his depictions of ethereal maidens in the renaissance style. He is said to have studied in Florence at the Accademia di Belle Arti, and exhibited at the Paris 1900 Exposition Universelle.
