Certificate Vignette June 12, 2002: 10:16 AM EDT NEW YORK - Samuel Waksal, the former chief executive officer of ImClone Systems Inc. who hobnobbed with Mick Jagger and Martha Stewart, was arrested Wednesday on charges of insider trading. Waksal was arrested at 6:30 a.m. ET at his Manhattan home, a Waksal spokesperson according to CNN. Several people associated with Waksal and ImClone -- including Waksal's friend, home-decorating guru Martha Stewart -- have been scrutinized by federal investigators for selling large amounts of ImClone stock in late December 2001, just days before the Food and Drug Administration formally refused to approve ImClone's anti-cancer drub Erbitux. ImClone Systems officials learned that the FDA might not accept the biotech firm's application to market anti-cancer drug Erbitux three days before the agency formally informed the company of the news on Dec. 28, according to a report in The Wall Street Journal. Between the time company officials learned of the possible FDA action and the time the agency actually notified the company of its decision, several relatives of top executives as well as media entrepreneur Martha Stewart, a friend of ex-CEO Samuel Waksal, sold ImClone stock, according to the report.
