Old Hermitage Bourbon Bottle, American Medicinal Spirits Co.
This is a bottle that still has the paper labels on it from the prohibition era. The bourbon brand was Old Hermitage, bottled and sold by the American Medicinal Spirits Company. It is in excellent condition with no damages to the paper labels and it also has the original glass top with the bottle. The back label states that it is 1 pint of 100% proof whisky made prior to September 8, 1917. It was bottled by the W. A. Gaines & Co., Inc. Distillery No.106, 7th Dist of Ky. Permit No. Ky-A-24. It also states:"For medicinal purposes only." The American Medicinal Spirits Company was formed to meet the need of providing medicinal whisky to the lame and blind during Prohibition after passage of the Volstead Act in 1919. Throughout the Proihibition years the number of distilleries declined to only apx 27 - 33. The American Medicinal Spirits Co. was one distilling family's answer to the crushing Federal Legislation. There would be only a handful of companies ready when the ban was lifted to consolidate and dominate the liquor market. The American Medicinal Spirits Co. would be one of them and was one of the few distillers legally selling booze during the prohibited years. This is a very rare and unusual bottle from the Prohibition era.
