The 90,000 strong Hemba people reside on the Lualaba River in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. A very diverse ecological area leads to subsistence agriculturalist of staples including manioc, maize, peanuts, beans and yams, some hunting and fishing done mostly by the men, and panning of copper from the river. They live in small family matrilineal groups. This small passport mask is of the mwisi gwa so'o masqueraders style, a highly sylized chimpanze-man with a wide slightly opened smiling mouth and often a long pointed nose and convex narrow slitted eyes.
