Hand carved wooden 18th century 'Atlas' figural support table with the patterned circular top being supported by the kneeling Atlas, outstanding detail to the human form, from the expression on his face, and the movement of his hair, beard and mustache, to the delicate tension of the muscles under the table's strain. The circular patterned platform base is supported by four distinct lion's feet and meticulously adorned with a quatrefoil floral pattern and would make a unique one of a kind conversation piece addition to any fine household or collection.
SIZE: 32" height, 20" inches (diameter).
CONDITION: The tabletop appears to have been reattached to the figures outstretched arms at some point using two pieces of wood and screws. One of the underside finials are missing. There is a minor indentation in the middle part of the lower leg. The back of the figure bears a 11cm (diameter length-wise) age-split in the wood. Splitting is typical and an accepted condition of extremely old pieces of wooden furniture. Overall very good condition.
BACKGROUND: Atlas holding the sky: Some say that the Titan Atlas worked out the science of astrology and discovered the spherical nature of the stars. But he is best known for bearing on his shoulders the pillars, which keep earth and heaven apart. This burden, a heavy one and difficult to grasp, is the punishment Zeus imposed on him for having been the leader of the TITANS during their war against the OLYMPIANS. And Atlas, they say, though pre-eminent in strength, moans as he holds the vault of the sky on his back.
