Boylston Antiques is Proud to Offer for Sale A New Hampshire Ladder Back Rush Seated Black Painted Chair – Circa 1830. This chair is has four back slats which are curved on top and flat on the bottom, indicating a New England origin. The front legs are ring-turned, indicating New Hampshire. The chair has been painted black over the years but indications from the paint flaking indicate the original color was green. The plain turned rear legs extend up to form the plain turned rear stiles and are raked to allow the legs to flair. The rush seat is in useable condition; the front 2” of rush are broken but the seat is still sturdy. The front stretcher has bold, vasiform turnings with plenty of wear evident. Wear is also evident on the round tops of the front legs and on the turned conical finials which adorn the rear stiles. • Rear stile height is 44 ½ ” from floor. • Seat height is 18”. • Seat width at front is 17 ½”. • Seat depth is 14”. • Width at top of stiles is 15”. • There are 6 stretchers, 2 on each side and one in the front and one at the rear. • Weight is 10 lbs. This chair is solid and sturdy; the joints are tight and the rush is serviceable, although broken at the front in 2” section. The paint is flaked and chipped, especially on the legs and stretchers.
