Marble cameo bust set against a black background (glass?) enclosed in a sgrafitto-carved alabaster frame. The identity of the cameo subject is unknown, but the laurel wreath would indicate that it is probably of a Roman emporer. Classical-themed items such as cameo plaques, micro-mosaics and small marble and bronze figurines were popular souvenirs from the "Grand Tour" of the Continent. Italian, ca. 1850. Excellent condition, with only the slightest wear around the outer edges of the alabaster frame. 5-1/2" x 4-1/4".
