This is a lovely porcelain hand painted and transfer decorated cabinet vase manufactured by Erdmann Schlegelmilch Porcelain some time during the late 19th C (1880's - 1890's). This plate, well attributed on its base with the overglaze green "Rutal Saxe / E S / Germany" mark surrounding a crown, has a deep red ground and a romantic central transfer (Cupid with a young lady lying on a fainting couch in a garden setting) within a central medallion. The medallion is surrounded by a delicate parcel gilt ring which fades to flowers and vines. The single handle is gilt covered, showing the normal wear one would expect following 100 years of handling, and the back of the vase also has a delicate parcel gilt design. The base, showing the expected wear of the ages, is rimmed in parcel gilt. And the mouth of the vase is also rimmed with parcel gilt. There is one very minor "flake" missing from the top of this vase. It can be seen at about 7 o'clock on the picture of the opening of the vase, and appears as a loss to the gold more than a defect to the vase. It is all but unseeable from the front. I try very hard to offer only "perfect" items for sale, but this vase is just too pretty (and the damage too slight) to withhold offering it at this time. Measuring 6" high by 5 1/2" wide and 3 1/4" from front to back, this is a very special German cabinet vase.
