Unavailable
This lovely oil on panel depicting figures on a busy waterfront was painted by the American artist, George Washington Nicholson (1832-1912).  Panel measures 11.7 x 16 in and the frame measures 16.7 x 20 in.   The work bears strong resemblence to other waterfront genre scenes painted in Holland and elsewhere in Europe.   Nicholson was born in Salem County, New Jersey and spent most of his career in Philadelphia and south Jersey. He studied in Paris under Louis Gabriel-Eugene Isaby (1803-1886) and travelled widely throughout France, England, Middle East, and the Far East. He was a prolific landscape painter who often painted subjects based on his overseas travels.  His work shows influence of J.M.W.Turner.   He was an Associate of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. He is known to have exhibited at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts (1867), the National Academy of Design (1874), Brooklyn Art Association (1875), the Art Institute of Chicago (1900), and the American Art Society (1902).
