Vachon (1914-1975) joined the Farm Service Administration as a file clerk/ messenger in 1936, and began photographing for the FSA in 1941. He followed Roy Stryker to the Standard Oil Project in 1943, was a member of the Photo League, and after the war joined Look Magazine. Vachon acknowledged the influence of Walker Evans, evident in this photograph. Critic Jonathan Green described Evans choice of subject matter, also applicable to Vachons, as what was considered beneath notice.
