A sterling silver cigarette case presented by Friedrich Hollander to Tubby Garron, ca. 1940's. The exterior of the case is black enamel with a sterling silver plate engraved "To Tubby Garron My Pal Fred Hollander." The interior is sterling silver with a large catch for holding cigarettes. It is marked "Sterling 1595." The piece comes with the original box marked "Roger Holmes Jewelers Hollywood, California." There are 3 chips in the enamel on the top of the piece, but no other dents or damage. Friedrich Hollander was a musician and composer born in Germany and considered one of the founders and leading forces of the Berlin cabaret movement of the 1920's and early 1930's. He was an important intellectual figure in Berlin at that time, leading a jazz band, composing music, and directing satirical anti-Nazi cabaret revues. He composed the music for the 1929 classic "The Blue Angel" which starred Marlene Dietrich and included the famous standard "Falling In Love Again." With the rise of the Nazis in 1933, Hollander was forced to flee Germany. He emigrated to the US and moved to Hollywood. In Hollywood, he composed the music for more than 120 films and earned 4 Oscar nominations. He became fast friends with Tubby Garron who was head of the music department at Paramount Pictures. He returned to Germany in the early 1950's and died in Berlin in 1976. Shipping quoted upon sale.
