This is circa 1900 Ivory Stanhope-Viewer in the form of a pair of binoculars with one photo of the Dome of INvalids. Dôme des Invalides (dome of the disabled)is a gold-domed building now used as a burial site for a number of the countrys war heroes ( including Napoleon) and is considered one of the worlds most exciting examples of French Baroque architecture where the spirits of soldiers and the turbulent past of France reside. It was originally constructed by Louis XIV as a burial church--a magnificent building with a golden dome.Proposed by Louis XIV in 1670 as a home for invalids - disabled and impoverished war veterans, Les Invalides was designed by Libéral Bruant and completed in 1676.The Sisters of Charity looked after the soldiers in the 17th century, to the WWII resistants, including queens and empresses. To have these binoculars with one of the stanhopes still intact is quite a treasure! THe scene is in the right lense with nothing in the other. THese measure 1"long and have their original antique silken cord. VintageSparkles offers Layaway on all our pieces regardless of which site it comes from.
