Fred Pegram lends his charming pen and ink style to this original and rare Vintage Belle Epoque 1912 Ad for Sanatogen Nerve Tonic. Taken from an issue of Literary Digest Magazine this is a fascinating image of what became one of the modern ills- nervousness and tension from a high-pressure professional environment. This ad has a touch of melodrama as mamma and daughter arrive at pappas office- (note the roll-top desk and the wicker waste basket)- with a bottle of Santanogen to help soothe tired and brain-fagged pops nerves! The term "nervous breakdown" had tremendous power to sell products in this era- note the drama of the ad copy telling us that men and women need to forge ahead and accomplish great things but can never do so if they are ill or tired.
