This painting of the Atlantic Surf was done in oils on upson board by Willie Daniels. Daniels was one of a group of 21 self-taught Afro-American artists during the 1950s, 60s, and 70s who have come to be known as the "Florida Highwaymen." These young men and one woman painted at night and took to the roadways by day, traveling up and down Florida's East Coast selling their Florida Landscapes to motels, banks, and professional offices. In the 1990's collectors began seeking out these paintings, resulting in an escalation of prices. These paintings, which once sold from trunks of automobiles for $25 now command $500 to $10,000 in art galleries through the state. This painting has the original carpenters molding artist-made frame and is in very good condition, especially in view of its age. The dimensions given include the frame.
