Signature and catalog number (#355) burned into negative; titled Yosemite Valley in pencil recto on the mount. Illustrated in George Fiske Yosemite Photographer by Paul Hickman and Terence Pitts, 1980. George Fiske (1835-1918) was Yosemites first resident photographer, active primarily in the late 19th century. Fiske had the good fortune of learning his craft working with Charles Weed, who produced the first photographs of Yosemite, and later with Carleton E. Watkins and probably Eadweard Muybridge. Fiske was much admired by Ansel Adams, who called him a top interpretive photographer, and Fiskes influence on Adams work is evident.
