First Edition of Charles Dickens' DAVID COPPERFIELD

Unavailable
First edition of "The Personal History of David Copperfield" by Charles Dickens. London: Bradbury & Evans, 1850. 624 pages. Illustrations by H. K. Browne, with 38 full page plates as well as an illustrated frontispiece and vignette title page.

Dark green half leather binding with marbled sides and marbled edges and endpapers. Spine has 5 gilt-decorated raised bands, gilded lines at top and bottom, and DAVID COPPERFIELD and C DICKENS in gilt. The book was purchased from the R. E. Olds family estate in Michigan.

Book has "Errata" page with 6 lines, and a half title page. Chapter XXVII is listed in Contents as starting on page 283, not the actual page 282. "Recall" is misprinted as "recal" on line 1 on page 16 and on line 22 of page 225. On page 19, 12 lines from bottom, is "cha pter ;ut". "Corroboration" is misprinted as "coroboration" 6 lines from the bottom on page 387. There are missing closing quotation marks 13 lines from the bottom on page 472. On page viii of the preface, the final "i" is misaligned. The vignette title page is dated 1850. "Screwed" is correctly printed on page 132.

There is moderate wear to the exterior of the book, especially to the edges and corners. There is rubbing and scratching to the marbled sides. There is a nameplate neatly attached to the inside cover: EX LIBRIS, ROBERT HALL, 1902. In pencil, on the flyleaf, is the British pound sign followed by 7-7-0 and "First Edition". There is a small pencil notation "s/s" on the back of the title page and a penciled signature ""Whitby Bridgewater" on the first page of Chapter 1. On the front of the back endpaper are 4 short lines of unfamiliar words in pencil. The illustration plates have various levels of foxing and browning from very little to quite a bit, with the frontispiece and vignette title page showing the most foxing. The majority of text pages are fairly to quite clean with some pages having light browning. All pages are somewhat wavy but intact and attached. A few pages have slightly ragged edges. There is a slight separation of pages at some of the illustrations and in a couple of spots near the end of the book. One illustration is more than 50% detached. More photographs are available upon request.
