Fireback, Cast Iron, Hopewell Furnace

To a fine and rare dated 1772 cast iron fireback. Upon a ribbon above the floral pattern the iron master "MARK BIRD" has set his name with that of "HOPEWELL FURNACE" which was located on French Creek, Union Township, Berks County, Pennsylvania. Started c.1759. Bird a lieutenant-colonel in the American revolution. Unfortunately because of reverses he went bankrupt in 1785-1788. This fireback shows a rich rococo urn with flowers and arabesque. This is a rare survival in good condition with one small original iron stress crack to the bottom center. The fireback has been painted black and the detail picked out in gold. (#1597)
