Otto Wernicke of Grand Rapids patented the original "elastic" bookcase around 1892 and produced them in his own plant under the Wernicke name until around 1902. That's when he formed a partnership with Globe in Cincinnati and bookcases using his patent were produced under the Globe-Wernicke label. However, Wernicke was not happy with arrangement so he went back to Grand Rapids and purchased the factory owned by Fred Macey in 1905 calling it the Macey-Wernicke Co which was shortened to just Macey in 1907. So Macey filing cabinets, bookcases, etc. were actually made by Otto Wernicke who started it all in 1892. They are featured in a 1914 advertisement in Gustav Stickley's Craftman magazine: "1908 - 1940 Macey Co. stacking or 'barrister' bookcases (a.k.a. 'elastic' bookcases), davenports, chairs, desks, filing cabinets, bank fixtures." We obtained this nice American Oak Macey Filing Cabinet from a Texas connection. Beautiful, quarter-sawn oak flows over the entire piece. Eight drawers, 1 1/2" deep wide are provided for smaller items. At the bottom, two large filing drawers are designed to hold file folders. Side & back recessed panels complete the piece with its original Macey label. This piece has been professionally restored & refinished.
