Faience Wall Pocket Desvres George Martel c1930
- Item Not Available
This is a rare French Faience Fleur-de-Lis Wall Pocket made in the Desvres region of France. The subject matter is a small Fleur-de-Lis vase with a coat of arms on the front, and a hole in the back, suitable for hanging on the wall. The décor includes stylized dots, designs, and two Fleur-de-Lis. The modeling, decorating, and glaze are well done with typical colors of Desvres pottery: creamy white background decorated with bright dark blue, brilliant lemon yellow, iron red, and sage green. The backside and inside are glazed. The underside is marked GM in under glaze blue, the mark of GEORGE MARTEL, and 1906 for a decorators mark. Desvres faience was a famous art pottery technique whereby tin glazes and decorations are applied over modeled terra cotta clay forms, and fired several times in a kiln. Please note this is not Quimper, but Desvres. Though similar, there are different color palettes used and other nuances on the two potteries. Dimensions (in inches): 5.1 Tall X 3.8 Wide X 1.3 Deep. Weight 5.4 Oz. The date is circa 1930. The item is in very good condition other than firing flaws and minor wear; there have been no repairs or restorations. Shipping and Insurance USPS Priority Mail within the U.S. is $10.00. Thanks for bidding!
