We offer a marvelous enameled icon of the Virgin of Kazan.
This larger icon measures some 15 1/2 inches high by 13 1/2 inches across and is housed in a newer kiot of wood and glass with brass highlights. We can only surmise that the former owner had the kiot replaced and also probably had the images of the Virgin and Child touched up.
The icon is splendidly painted and is jewel-like almost similar to the paintings so often seen in a medieval Book of Hours. The Virgin and Child are beautiful. What is, of course, even more spectacular is the surrounding oklad. The oklad and rizza are made essentially of vermeil silver, some of which is in fact decorated in swirls of filigreed silver. The remainder is covered in wonderfully shaded enamel that is spectacular in that it all complements this wonderful piece of Russian artistic endeavour. The enamelling is so typical in its shading of the stupendous shaded ennamelling of Maria Semenova that so typified the late 19th century and early 20th century and was evident in the magnificent mansions and palaces of pre-revolutionaly Russia.
We have not removed the icon from the kiot for fear of damaging the piece. So we cannot see the marks that are likely on the underside of this piece framed in gilded wood. Hence, we cannot be specific with the exact age of this wonderous piece. Shipping costs are expensive as with items of this nature we arrange with a bonded and fully insured packer, ity Movers, to specially pack and fully insure the item in transit.
