Lovely etched glass Biscuit Barrel with very elaborate etched designs of cat tails and birds. The bird motif is highly sought after by collectors. The finial on the lid is the "Biscuit" label that sports a coiled rope on the reverse side. Large starburst cut on base of Biscuit Barrel is another indication of its quality as is the beaded silver plate handle. A stunning example of the exquisite etched glass work that was employed by the finest craftsmen of the period. The detail in the rendering of the bird and cattail design is simple extraordinary. Traditionally Biscuit Barrels would be be the elegant receptacle for the biscuits (similar to American crackers but sweeter) served at tea time. As the tea services became more elaborate and ritualized, more elegant the Biscuit Barrels were needed. We currently have a collection of over 100 Biscuit Barrels - ranging from the traditional cut glass versions, to ones with elaborate etched designs, rare colours and unique designs incorporated in wooden barrels.
