Backplate of one piece; featuring integral gussets with roped edges; further embossed with an inside roped border and raised medallions etched with male and female busts. Radiating vertical etched bands showing foliage and military trophies in typical Milanese fashion. Turned apron with etched band ensuite and roped border. Buckles riveted at the top corners for the attachment of a leather strap. Old riveted repairs to the edges and center of apron, as well as lower corner of left gusset. Etching is all there, but lacks detail due to wear commensurate with its age. Many of these were also gilt, though only very slight visible traces remain. A few very small rust holes showing in deep recesses of the etching. Possibly from the workshops of Pompeo della Cesa of Milan, who was the most sought-after armourer of the late 16th C.
