A tile from a rare neo-medieval aesthetic era series by W.T. Copeland & Sons. The scene depicted is from the induction of Shakespeare's "Taming of the Shrew" in which Christopher Sly, a drunken Warwickshire tinker, is picked up by a lord and his page while on a hunt on the heath and brought to the castle, sumptuously treated, and in spite of his protestations to the contrary, is assured that he is a lord who has been out of his mind. He then is set down to watch the play that follows, performed solely for his benefit by strolling players (Oxford Companion to English Literature). The tile is underglaze block-printed and enamel overglazed by hand and from Copeland's Shakespeare series. Tile is in good-very good condition with a shallow but long (1.5") upper edge chip at right. Surface is in good shape with only light wear. Please write with any questions you may have.
