Edoardo Calandra Orientalist Oil Painting Portrait of a Falconer (1852-1911)

This exceptional oil on canvas by the Italian artist and novelist, Eduardo Calandra (1852-1911), depicts a proud falconer. Stretcher measures 30" by 25", and resides in a period giltwood and gesso frame measuring 40" by 35" by 4" (102 cm by 89 cm by 10 cm). Signed "E Calandra" in lower right corner. According to a posting on AskArt, the artist was born in Murello and moved with his family to Turin Italy. The son of a lawyer, Calandra was well educated and had a broad range of interests, including archaeology, geology and engineering. He studied art at the Albertina in Turin, and soon became a successful painter and illustrator. (His younger brother, Davide, was a successful sculptor.) Later in life his interests turned to writing, and he became a critically acclaimed and commercially successful novelist. His most notable novels include To The Better End or Overdoing (1890), Discipline (1892), The Storm (1898) and A War (1906). Calandra's works periodically appear at auction. The most recent notable sale of a work by Calandra occurred at Sotheby's in London on June 13, 2006. In their Orientalist Sale (L06104), lot 229, a work entitled The Bazaar, a canvas measuring just 12.75" by 10" (32.5 cm by 25.5 cm), was offered with an estimate of 6,000-8,000 GBP, and sold for 8,400 GBP.
