Edmund Coates (American 1816 - 1871) Born in England; a listed American artist in the Hudson River style. Coates lived in New York City during his active years (1837 - 1872). Although noted for his Hudson River style, he also travelled to New Hampshire and Canada. This piece is entitled Mountain Retreat and has a European (perhaps Canadian) feel - though it is not clear that Coates traveled abroad. The detail in this image is quite good. The subject is very pleasant with great depth to the lower right where the artist depitcs a small village at the foot of the mountains with sailboats on a lake. Housed on its original stretcher with no restoration. Craquelure to the surface. The frame is old but perhaps not original. Current collections held by the New York Historical Society and the New York State Historical Association. This peice measures 19 3/4 wide by 15 7/8 high. The sight size is 15 1/2 by 11 3/4. Signed and dated lower left - 1863. A very nice presentation. Your complete satisfaction is our goal. If you are not happy with an item purchased, return it in it's original condition for a refund.
