This is an unusual example of the much sought after "Regard" jewelry, in which a message of friendship is spelled out by the first letter of each of the gems: (R)uby, (E)merald, (G)arnet, (A)methyst, (R)uby, (D)iamond. These usually take the form of rings, so its appearance in a necklace is quite unusual. The chain and setting are of 9k gold and the gems are actually paste, making this affordable to the rising middle class in 19th century England. There is a ring at the base of the pendant to accommodate a further drop, possibly a pearl to symbolize purity. The length of the necklace is 16 inches.
