Early Hand Grenade, German, ca. 1630

Unavailable
Iron, cast in two halves, nearly 3" diameter and weighing approximately 2 ½ pounds. Knob on side to prevent mistaken use as a cannon ball, which could result in the explosion of the cannon barrel. Round fuse hole. Remnants of original gunpowder charge. This is from a crate of live grenades recently found buried while doing road work in a German city and dates to the Thirty Years War. The powder and fuse have been removed for safety and to allow transport. Early grenade predating the formation of organized “grenadier” troops.
