This is a beautiful little Chicken on Nest candy container made by the J. H. Millstein Co. of Jeannette, PA circa 1946. It is marked on the base - Manufactured by the J. H. Millstein Co., Jeannette, PA., Patent Applied For -. This chicken is 4-1/4 inches tall, 5 inches long from beak to tail. The base is oval and is 3-3/4 inches long by 2-1/2 inches wide. The interior is hollow to hold multicolored candy eggs with either green or purple shredded wax paper. The cost of these containers was a whopping $23.00 per gross (144) or 16 cents each and they retailed for 25 to 29 cents each. The glass was advertised as being highly fire polished. You can see the ad from November, 1946 Chain Store Age publication in photo No.4. Great collectible. This date is a little late for EAPG but they were probably made for a long time before this ad. The photo came from the book - Glass Candy Containers 1909 to 1947 - printed by The West Virginia Museum of American Glass, Ltd. Look them up on Ebay. They have some great items for sale.
