Description:
A fine and rare Yuan Dynasty Underglaze Red Meiping , ca.1279-1368. The vase is nicely potted. Weighing in at 5 lbs. The vase exhibits classic diagnostic details that are consistent with attribution. The underglaze red pigment of the Yuan dynasty, which the world's first inventory of this color, varied in development while firing. The Song and Yuan reducing kilns would fire at around 1200 degrees centigrade. The application of the color was painted by hand. The thickness along with the high firing temperature and variences in the firing temperature, the glaze would develop unevenly. As by close inspection you will see that the painted designs actually "pulled" on the surface of the leathery clay during firing. One can see also areas where the glaze seems more translucent. There are areas where the glaze was applied to thickly or the temperature wasn't right and formed black spots that by age exhibits further a shimmer. The base ground is a pale "shadow" blue like YingQing wares of the Song dynasty. The glaze was intented to be white, but came out slightly bluish. This blue is more sublime, almost like a white glaze with the "feel" of the color blue blushing through. The decoration is of 2 flying dragons seemingly chasing one another around the proud chest area of the meiping. Above that are scrollwork and floral details. The foot has the classic Yuan petal and more scrollwork. The base of the unglazed foot exhibits an orangish beige color. The color orange develops long after the firing process and is another diagnostic of significant age.b5/1
