Description: A large and large Yuan dynasty blue and white, porcelain meiping, ca.1351-68. Dimensions: 11-7/8" tall, 7-3/8" diameter (widest). Blue and white, known as qinghua, is underglaze cobalt blue painted on top of white ground with clear top glaze. Qinghua wares were produced in the Jingdezhen kilns. Large vases as this one are dated to the later half of the 14th century. Qinghua was introduced first, worldwide, in China during the early Yuan dynasty. The underglaze blue was low fired. Due to the high magnesium content and difficulty controlling the new color. The glaze would fire somewhat unevenly. Forming lustrous patches or areas where the cobalt blue is navy to black in color. The underglaze blue color also shrank and drew on the soft porcelain during firing. This shrinkage can be felt along the outlines of the decorations. Also characteristics is small orange or iron spots in the glaze. Due to the high quality of form, size and workmanship, we believe that this piece is probably Guan yao. Made in the imperial kilns for the imperial court. The white glaze has a hint of blue, much like that of Qingbai wares. The entire meiping is decorated in underglaze cobalt blue designs. The shoulder is painted with a design of scrolling lotus and flowers. The body larger paintings of the 4-season flowers and scrolling lotus vine. Above the foot rim has panels enclosing clouds and lotus vines and flowers. The meiping is glazed over the full exterior, including the inside of the mouth rim and neck. The foot rim is unglazed and revealing an orange-tan color. The meiping is also finely potted. A truly rare and exquisite Qinghua meiping example!
