Description:
A superb collection of 18 original U.S. Army War Department photographs of German Prisoners of War stationed at Ft. Sheridan,Illinois. These photographs offer a very rare glimpse into the lives of German prisoners in the United States. The photographs show the men making gas mask and repairing machinery along with helping local farmers out. The best photographs in my viewpoint show a funeral held at the camp for a Nazi Officer. The Americans even allowed the Nazi Flag to be draped over the coffin and a full military funeral with honors! None of the German prisoners seem to object being held in the camp. Why would they? This was certainly a stark contrast to the way Americans were being treated in German & Japanese POW Camps. All the photographs have descriptions of the picture along with the official War Department stamp on the verso. In addition all of them measures 8 x 10 with the exception of one photograph which is 5 x 7. One of the best World War 2 photo collections I have seen in many years.
