Any reader, writer, researcher, student, or Army veteran of America's military involvement in World War II will value this one-of-a-kind guide to the Army ground force organizations that won that war.

This 669 page encyclopedia contains a wealth of information that Russell Weigley correctly asserts is ""an indispensable first step"" for readers ""who otherwise could not understand-or properly comprehend-the American Army's participation in World War II.""

This book is more than just a list of thousands of ground force units. It contains summarized Tables of Organization and Equipment for divisions showing types of units assigned and authorized strengths, as well as charts of how the major units (divisions) expanded during the mobilization phase. It lists locations and dates when the units were formed, where they were stationed, in what campaigns they fought, what ports of embarkation they shipped out of, where they were located during combat, and where they ended the war.

Especially useful are Stanton's narrative histories of the divisions and regiments. This indispensable information allows the reader to follow specific subordinate units assigned to these formations throughout their wartime service.

Because this book is so packed with data, the author provides in the front of the book a handy guide to its use.

The first edition of this book was published in 1984. This revised edition is the result of more than twenty years of additional research conducted by the author at the National Archives and from Army records to confirm the existing data, and to fill in data that had been missing in Army unit data cards or poor or missing unit reports. This important information has been incorporated into this new edition at the expanded Addendum.
