Description: Lee Woodward Zeigler was born in Baltimore Maryland in 1868. He studied at the Maryland Institute but was predominantly self-taught as an artist. He drew for Life magazine from 1889-1904 and served as director of the St. Paul Institute’s School of Art from 1910-1918. After his tenure at St. Paul he began painting the beautiful murals for which he is so well known today. The most remarkable of which is the 18 panel mural covering 1800 square feet of wall space at the Enoch Pratt Free Library in Maryland entitled, “The Faerie Queen” which depicts the Age of Chivalry. Zeigler exhibited at the Art Institute of Chicago, the National Academy of Design, and the Salamagundi Club. He was a member of many groups including the Charcoal Club of Baltimore, the Hudson Highland AA, the AFA, and the Medieval Academy of America. His paintings have been sold in auctions for hundreds of dollars and interest in his work is sure to increase in coming years. “Woman in Profile” is a wonderful double-sided charcoal drawing signed by Zeigler. The front drawing is a gorgeous sketch of a nude woman leaning against a wall. Subtle shifts in light and shadow give the composition soft sensuality. Zeigler’s signature can be seen in the lower right corner and his official estate stamp is present in the lower left corner. The drawing on the back of the paper is no less stunning as the portrait of a man appears out of the darkness. It is unclear whether or not this is a self-portrait but the face of the man was rendered in fine detail. To showcase both sides of the drawing it has been mounted between two black mats and two panes of glass. The front side of the frame is silver and the back has been painted black. Including the frame this piece measures 15 ½” x 22 ¼.” This is a wonderful opportunity to own two original drawings by a well-known artist for the price of one! Don’t miss your chance to own this original Zeigler drawing and make it part of your collection of early 19th century American Art.
