William Heath Robinson (1872 - 1944) was born in London, the younger brother of Charles and Thomas Heath, educated at Islington and studied at the RA Schools before beginning to draw for the publishers. His earliest work was conventional book illustration and his black and white art became instantly recognisable.

It was only with the approach of the First World War that William’s passion for mad inventions found a market in that more industrial time and, later, he expanded into stage design; he had a large international following.
