Description:
One of the many books from the Estate of Francis P. Fretwell that we will be selling. The library is the largest privately owned collection of dog books in the world. Mr. Fretwell was the owner of Monfret Kennels, which bred champion standard poodles. He was former president and governor of the Poodle Club of America, and the Italian Greyhound Club of America. He also served as a delegate to the American Kennel Club for decades. His wonderful collection of books has been carefully maintained. *** The War Dog. By Edward Peple. New York: E. P. Dutton & Company, 1918. Inscribed by the author. 23p., blue paper over boards, white title label, colored frontispiece by Harrison Fisher (1875-1934). Poetic tribute to the Red Cross War Dogs of World War I. Spine rubbed and foxed, and with small loss near head. Covers have some light fading and light edge wear. Author inscription on front fixed endpaper, along with Mr. Fretwell's bp. Some staining along bottom edges. Several pages have closed tears. Some toning throughout.
