Description:
This hard to find walnut Victorian combination bookcase and desk is referred to as a side by side. They are commonly found in oak and mahogany, rarely walnut. The cabinet has a very layered and detailed cornice with incised carvings. Below are turnings which mimic columns on the front corners. The two glass doors have a pierced carved fretwork of stylized flowers. The tall glass door has 3 adjustable shelves measuring 12" deep by 24" wide. The small glass door has one adjustable shelf. Below is a desk lid with a deeply carved stylized leaf and floral carving inside a recessed panel. The lid falls down and is supported by 2 brass brackets and has an inset leather writing surface. Inside are 2 tiger maple drawers and 11 cubbies of various sizes. Below the lid are 3 drawers with inset burled walnut fronts. The case rests on a boldly moulded platform base and has its original castors. All the solid brass hardware on the lid and drawers is original. The handles on the glass doors are replaced but of the style and period. The finish is original and in very good condition. All the glass is original.
