Description:
This solid walnut secretary has a very restrained Victorian styling. The desk comes apart in 3 sections for ease in transporting. The top crest is finely carved and the finials are unique in their design. The 2 glass doors have their original wooden key escutcheons and working locks. Inside each door are 2 adjustable shelves. Below the doors are 3 hand-dovetailed drawers having their original brass pulls, key escutcheons and locks. The left drawer has a small piece of wood missing, roughly 1.5" wide by .25" tall. It appears that someone was trying to force entry into a locked drawer at one time. This is only visible upon close inspection. On the outside corners of the doors are elegantly carved and tuned half columns. There is also use of ebonized blocks for décor along the top and sides. The secretary base has a serpentine slant front which drops down to reveal a writing surface. The desk lid retains its original working lock and a key. Check out its beautiful interior. There are 4 small hand-dovetailed drawers with curly cherry fronts and inlaid maple design of a garland of bellflowers. In the center is an open compartment with a carved trim work above. The compartment measures 14.5" wide X 13" deep. The desk lid is supported by very heavy-duty cast brass hinges. Below are 2 raised panel doors having their original brass key escutcheon and working lock. Inside is a single shelf. Notice the decorative carvings along the outside corners of the base. The secretary rests on its original double wooden casters. The finish appears original and is in excellent condition having a warm color and patina.
