Description:
THE VIRGIN OF THE BOOK- AFTER BOTTICELLI(1445 – 1510). The painting is a reinterpretation of Sandro Botticelli (1445 – 1510) ’s Masterpiece, actually in Poldi Pezzoli museum, in Milan.
In the picture the Mother and the Child are reading a book, which due to its decorations has been identified as the "Book of Hours", namely a book of prayers that was widely popular between the Thirteenth and Sixteenth centuries.
The image retains an every-day life and familiar connotation, as the presence of common objects such as books and boxes highlights.
On the right hand side there is a window open on a landscape which, with its sunset light, illuminates the interior. However, the light which pervades the Mother and the Child does not seem to have a natural origin.
Rather, it appears to emanate from the two sacred figures themselves, turning the simple and domestic environment of the room into a mystical scene.
Also the fruits on the left are charged with a symbolical meaning: the cherries allude to Christ's blood, the plums to the tenderness of the Mother and the Child, while figs symbolize Jesus' Salvation and Resurrection; and then the crown of thorns on His arm also explicitly illustrate the meaning of the painting, namely the allusion to Christ's death and resurrection. The three nails symbol of the crucifixion lack in the hand of the child, than instead we find in original painting.
The delicate and elegant lines, alongside the calm and refinement of the composition, are distinctive of this painting.

Oil under glass. The first stage of the job consists in tracing the contours of the design with the china, in order to make this, the artist can burns it directly on the glass. He passes therefore to the filling of the spaces delimit from the contours, beginning from the details. The bottom, added in last place, covers all the painting. This is the inverse process regarding the creation of a work on canvas or paper, for which the bottom is the first one to being created. For this reason the glass is at the same time support and protection for the painting, which renders transparent, luminous, immaterial and fragile.

CONDITION
The painting is in good conditions. The glass, rounded in pillow shape, is almost unavailable and it corresponds to a production that ended in the last years of XIX the century. It does not show damages. The coating shows at low right signs a lack of colour.
FRAME
It is enriched of a beautiful wooden frame with ornaments, of a little later date that shows small lacks. It has been subjected to cleaning, also like the painting.

LA MADONNA DEL LIBRO- DOPO BOTTICELLI (1445 – 1510). Il dipinto è una reinterpretazione del capolavoro di Sandro Botticelli, attualmente conservato al Museo Poldi Pezzoli di Milano. Nel dipinto la Madonna e il Bambino stanno leggendo un libro, che in base alle decorazioni al tipo di caratteri, possiamo identificare con un Libro delle Ore, libro di preghiere e orazioni che ebbe larga diffusione tra il XIII e il XVI secolo. L’immagine colpisce per il tono intimo e profondamente familiare che trasmette, sottolineato anche dagli oggetti “comuni”, come può esserlo un libro ed i cesti in secondo piano. Sullo sfondo notiamo un accenno di paesaggio, che si evidenzia in una luce vespertina, che riesce ad illuminare con toni caldi anche l’interno. La luce, tuttavia, che illumina la Madonna e il Bambino, non sembra avere origine naturale. Sembra piuttosto irradiarsi dalle due figure divine, inglobando, quindi, gli oggetti quotidiani in quest’aura mistica. Tutto diventa simbolico: anche la frutta che troviamo nel lato destro del dipinto, come le ciliegie, che alludono al sangue di Cristo e le prugne, che possono essere considerate sia simbolo della tenerezza della madre verso il figlio, che figure simbolo della resurrezione di Gesù, e , infine la corona di spine rappresenta maggiormente il messaggio simbolico dell’intero dipinto: la passione, morte e resurrezione di Cristo. I tre chiodi, simbolo anch’essi della crocifissione, presenti nell’originale, mancano in questa reinterpretazione.
Le linee delicate ed eleganti sottolineano il tono calmo e pacato della composizione, diventando così il tratto distintivo di quest’opera.

FATTURA: Olio sotto vetro. Il primo stadio del lavoro consiste nel tracciare i contorni del disegno con la china, per fare questo l'artista può utilizzare un modello precedentemente realizzato o imprimerlo direttamente sul vetro. Si passa quindi al riempimento degli spazi delimitati dai contorni, cominciando dai dettagli. Il fondo aggiunto in ultimo luogo, ricopre l'insieme di tutta la pittura. Si assiste quindi al processo inverso rispetto alla creazione di un'opera su tela o su carta, per le quali il fondo è il primo ad essere creato. Per questo motivo il vetro è allo stesso tempo supporto e protezione della pittura, rendendola trasparente, luminosa, immateriale e fragile.

CONDIZIONI
Il dipinto è in buono stato di conservazione. Il vetro , bombato a forma di cuscino. È pressocchè introvabile e corrisponde ad una produzione che si è esaurita negli ultimi anni del XIX secolo, non presenta danni. Il film pittorico presenta in basso a destra segni di cadute di colore.
CORNICE
Esso è dotato di cornice lignea con fregio di poco posteriore, che mostra piccole mancanze. Essa è stata sottoposta a pulitura, come pure il dipinto.
